5th graders started math with some place value work. Student discourse (i.e. disagreement) is an essential component of an environment that encourages critical thinking.

The Smart Board is a tool for students to practice math facts.

Practicing equations and basic operations with card games.

Short term memory and multiplication facts.

Our first lesson in the readers workshop was about building a reading life. We all have reading lives. Sometimes they are "the bomb," and sometimes they are "the pits." See below.

Students illustrated instances when reading had been good and not so good.

Sustained, silent reading with excellent posture.

Hillary taught a lesson that laid the foundation for a year of social learning: zones of regulation." Students learn to identify and classify their emotional states and then learn how to  maintain or change them.
No homework. Here's a list of necessities and possibilities for Lake Anza:

Must have:
Snack and lunch
sun screen and hat
clothing layers for hot, cold, and wet

May have:
beach toys
books
swim goggles
towel
swimsuit
fishing rod, etc.

It's going to be a great day tomorrow to wrap up a fantastic week. I love this group already!
