Today was the first day of math class. Fifth graders created artwork based using rotational symmetry. For homework, they will finish their spiralling designs and brainstorm three ideas about how this is math. What is math anyway?

Nieema read Pezzetino, a classic book about personal identity vs. group identity by Italian writer Leo Lionni.

Students have had choice time the last two afternoons (well, we haven't actually given them choices, but we are teaching them what their choices will eventually be), and here you see one group's hand in Bananagrams.

Students did their first homework boogie this afternoon, learning about how the binders work and writing down their assignments on a weekly planner. Teachers check that they write their assignments correctly each day, then collect the planners on Fridays for assessment and feedback. We are teaching important student skills in fourth and fifth grade, and we try to provide scaffolding that will support students in future years.
Speaking of homework, here is tonight's (due tomorrow unless your family is celebrating Rosh Hashanah)
Math:
4th graders bring in something that represents "one."
5th graders finish their rotational symmetry spirals and write three brainstorms of how this is math.

Language Arts: Decorate your readers and writers notebook with photos, scraps from magazines

Read for 20 minutes or more and record on your planner your pages read.
