Concentration requires knowledge of multiplication facts and a good short-term memory.

Writers workshop is a silent time, unless a student is conferencing with a peer or teacher. The thinking in this shot is almost palpable. Writing is thinking.

Two students have decided to cowrite a historically-based novel about the Gold Rush. Here one of the authors shares chapter two.

Today, we created our first Voicethread in cultural studies. Despite some technology snafus, a few silly students, and the fact that it was our first time, it was a solid learning experience. Check it out!

Today I introduced peer conferences in the writers workshop. The main principle is that a writer must approach a peer with a question about their piece: How's my intro? Does the middle part make sense? etc. This group took the task very seriously and made their teacher happy.

Reading: 30 minutes
Spelling: Practice your words
Math:
Today fourth grade math students learned a new game, Good Times, that students could easily play at home with a deck of cards to practice math facts.  Rules to the game can be downloaded here.
4th grade math:
Please spend 10 minutes working on multiplication facts at the Math Magician Multi Maths web site.

Fifth graders played two games today that focused on shoring up multiplication facts. The first, called Concentration, is a memory game in which students must uncover matching facts (the 9x7 square matches with the 63 square, for example). They also played a game called Multiplication Compare that reenforced the skill of multiplication with trailing zeroes. Homework can be downloaded on yesterday's blog.
