Fifth graders constructed meaning this morning with yard sticks and inch-wide tiles. This was a game in which a player spins a fraction, decimal, and percent spinner, then takes as many tiles as the spinner suggests. 1/4 is 9 tiles, because 1/4 of 36 is 9. How many tiles would a player get that spun 16.66%?

Hillary taught a great lesson this afternoon on inner critic vs. inner coach. Students role-played different scenarios in which the critic and coach went back and forth discouraging and encouraging the character.

After checking their spore prints this morning, students were able to identify their mushrooms with scientific and common names.

In math club students mostly concentrated on a problem based on the popular carol, "The 12 Days of Christmas."  You can download the problem here--it reflects U.S. costs for 2012 for the various gifts in the song.  We were surprised by the cost and the number of total gifts!  A few people worked on puzzles, and students learned a couple of interesting math magic tricks involving the magic numbers 143 and 429. We ended by watching the first half of Vi Hart's "The Gauss Christmath Special."
