Cerrito came into five New Yorker covers this morning, and they stood talking amongst each other as they tried to discern the meaning of these brilliant but often cryptic images. I hope in our next issue of the Chanterelle to include more cartoons and a clever New Yorker-style cover. It will come out just before the winter holiday. Today was also the first day I have ever shown an episode of The Simpsons in writers workshop, or any TV show for that matter, especially one aired on Fox. Fear not, it was tied intricately to our study of the writer's life, and how books get made. When I caught this episode over Thanksgiving, I couldn't help myself, I had to show it to the students to help them think critically about what they read. Check it out this evening and get a good, deep laugh. We all need it!

Homework:
Read for 30 minutes
Write for 15 minutes
Math:
Fourth grade math
Today the math groups shifted based on the subtraction assessment students completed.  In the purple group, students shared their survey data and conclusions with classmates in a gallery walk, asking questions and making comments.  Students with strong subtraction skills continued data analysis work by looking at WNBA players' points per game, and analyzing the data.  They should complete option 2 homework.  Those students needing a little more practice with regrouping worked with base 10 blocks to practice making groups of tens from ones.  They should complete the option 1 JUMP packet for homework.

Fourth grade math homework, due tomorrow
Purple group
Option 1:  JUMP NS4.13 & 15, Regrouping & Addition
Option 2:  JUMP PDM5.11-12, Primary & secondary data, Samples & surveys (answer on sheet, not notebook)
If you are not finished after 30 minutes, please stop and have your parents write a note.

The blue group reviewed place value in numbers up to the hundred thousands.  This is in preparation for our work with base ten blocks as we review and solidify knowledge of addition and dive into subtraction with regrouping (also known as “borrowing”). 4th grade Blue Group:  Complete at least two more pages of the packet from class (and/or finish the packet).

5th graders continued work on their 10'000s charts today, finding numbers all over the grid and labeling them. They created equations and solved for questions like, "What number is 12 rows below 1,257?" Download homework on yesterday's blog. It is labeled Tuesday hw.
