Fifth graders started Show Me 1/2 this morning, a manipulative-based fractions curriculum.

More Show Me 1/2

Students enjoyed a (sugar-free) fruit popsicle after developing critical perspectives on a "Supermarket Safari." Their job was to analyze food packaging and decide which foods in the store had the most packaging, were made of recycled materials, had the most attractive advertising, etc. See below for comments from our student-led discussion on packaged foods:

Indians would eat what they saw, it didn't matter what kind of food it was (they didn't have a choice)

They used to hunt because they had to. They enjoyed the food because they did all the work to get it. People don't pay attention to the flavor and eat food fast so they don't enjoy it.

These days, people who make foods have been making it addictive so you eat a bunch. These days people are so into getting as much money as possible that they sell a bunch of unhealthy foods that are cheap packaged foods.

I think it changed because back before people had packaging, the N.A. would just get would they could and needed.

Back then, the people would eat to survive, and now they eat whenever they want to, and whatever tastes good or what they are craving. Sometimes the Indians when they were in a tough survival situation, they would sit in one spot so they wouldn't waste any calories.

Indians just hunted and used to eat to stay alive and now people eat regularly. People snack now. They used to get their food from farms, and they don't need to go to a food market because their food was right there in the back yard.

Students should read 30 minutes every day this weekend. Fourth graders have math that is downloadable on yesterday's blog.
