We had a visit from Elizabeth Partridge today, the award-winning children's and y.a. book author. She is an incredible woman who has time and again in her life carved her own path, guided by her ethics and ideals. She writes eloquently about Civil Rights, John Lennon, Vietnam, and much more. She was the first woman to graduate in Women's Studies from Cal. Huh? Wow! The students were enthralled and inspired.
We also began building solar ovens. A short lesson on the principles solar energy led to individual planning, then communicating ideas to a small group, then coming to a consensus on the group's design, then building. Group communication was the most challenging and important part of the process, and engagement was remarkably high. We'll test the ovens on s'mores tomorrow!
