The time machine landed in Cerrito Creek this morning, transporting us back from the early 1800s to our present day. We had math class, practiced spelling, and had a stirring discussion about the Redskins team name. On the last point, we are planning our rebuttal to the letter the team association sent in response to our request for a name change. We watched Obama's thoughts on the matter and discussed what makes a name offensive. Is it the historical origin of the name (it's etymology)? Is it the context in which it has been used to alienate an oppressed group? I'd lean toward the latter, but in any case, it made for a great discussion. Expect the art show later this week, called Process, opening Thursday night in the Depot. Otherwise, let's try to bring things back to "normal" and focus on academic, social, and behavioral goals for this wonderful group of students.
